Some of the large-scale features of the moon&#8217;s surface could be seen in the GOES-12 visible channel image <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em>, while the other 4 InfraRed (IR) channels <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> revealed  a &#8220;banded&#8221; pattern of brightness temperatures resulting from the large thermal gradient between  the very hot sunlit portion of the moon <em>(where temperatures can reach +110\u00c2\u00ba C \/ +230\u00c2\u00ba F)<\/em> and  the very cold &#8220;dark&#8221; side of the moon <em>(where temperatures can fall to -180\u00c2\u00ba C \/ -292\u00c2\u00ba F)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" title=\"GOES-12 imager channels 1-6\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/05\/070524_G12_IMAGER_MOON.GIF\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"480\" height=\"362\" align=\"middle\" alt=\"GOES-12 imager channels 1-6\" title=\"GOES-12 imager channels 1-6\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/05\/070524_G12_IMAGER_MOON.GIF\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The moon was observed adjacent to the Earth&#8217;s limb on the GOES-12 imagery at 11:15 UTC on 24 May 2007.
