The thick smoke plume obscured the satellite&#8217;s view of the fire point source much of the time, preventing the continuous derivation of Fire Power and Fire Temperature products (and masking the thermal anomaly in the Shortwave Infrared images).<\/p>\n<p>However, a comparison of Shortwave Infrared images from GOES-17 <em>(GOES-West)<\/em> and GOES-16 <em><strong>(below)<\/strong> <\/em>revealed that the western satellite&#8217;s viewing angle allowed the thermal anomaly of the fire source <em>(hot black-enhanced pixel)<\/em> to be seen for a longer time period &#8212; (<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_Band03.pdf\"><strong>0.86 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>) images with plots of pilot reports <em><strong>(below)<\/strong> <\/em>indicated that the smoke existed at altitudes of <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2021\/06\/210614_1356utc_goes16_nearInfraredVegetaton_pilot_report.png\"><strong>2500<\/strong><\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2021\/06\/210614_1756utc_goes16_nearInfraredVegetation_pilot_report.png\"><strong>3000<\/strong><\/a> feet, but was not restricting the surface visibility at sites that were downwind of the fire.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 651px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"thumbnail\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2021\/06\/210614_goes16_nearInfraredVegetation_IL_fire_smoke_plume_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2021\/06\/il_fire_nir-20210614_170116.png\" alt=\"GOES-16 Near-Infrared &quot;Vegetation&quot;
