This surge of moisture <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"GOES PW animation\" href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/misc\/blog\/060904_goes_pw.mov\"><em><strong>(QuickTime animation)<\/strong><\/em><\/a> prompted the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) to issue a Mesoscale Convective Discussion concerning heavy rainfall over the lower deserts of southern California and Arizona <em><strong>(below, right)<\/strong><\/em>. <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"GOES sounder + MODIS PW\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2006\/09\/060904_awips_goes_modis_pw.jpg\"><strong>GOES sounder and MODIS PW values<\/strong><\/a> compared favorably well, and at one point (08 UTC) the GOES sounder PW derived product indicated an isolated value of <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"GOES sounder PW\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2006\/09\/060904_awips_goes_pw_08.jpg\"><strong>61 mm (2.4 inches)<\/strong><\/a> over Arizona. <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"Surface dew points\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2006\/09\/060904_awips_goes_pw_obs.jpg\"><strong>Surface dew point temperatures<\/strong><\/a> reached the 60s and 70s F at some sites in the lower deserts, and rainfall from thunderstorms that subseqently developed was responsible for some flash flooding in parts of California and Arizona.<br \/>\n<a title=\"AWIPS GOES Sounder PW\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2006\/09\/060904_awips_goes_pw8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"220\" height=\"208\" align=\"left\" alt=\"AWIPS GOES Sounder PW\" id=\"image38\" title=\"AWIPS GOES Sounder PW\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2006\/09\/060904_awips_goes_pw8.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"SPC Mesoscale Convective Discussion\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/misc\/blog\/spc_mcd_1931.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"220\" height=\"165\" align=\"right\" alt=\"SPC Mesoscale Convective DIscussion\" id=\"image37\" title=\"SPC Mesoscale Convective DIscussion\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2006\/09\/mcd1931.gif\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Subtropical moisture associated with weakening Hurricane John began to spread northward into the desert southwest, which was well depicted on AWIPS imagery of the GOES sounder total precipitable water (PW) derived product (below, left).
