The strong winds &#8212; with some gusts in excess of 70 mph &#8212; caused power outages which affected several hundred thousand residents (and persisted into the next day: <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2021\/05\/210505_1357utc_MS_power_outages.png\"><strong>MS<\/strong><\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2021\/05\/210505_1357utc_AL_power_outages.png\"><strong>AL<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The corresponding 1-minute GOES-16 \u201cClean\u201d Infrared Window (<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_Band13.pdf\"><strong>10.35 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>) images\u00a0<em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed numerous overshooting tops that exhibited infrared brightness temperatures in the -75 to -70\u00baC range <em>(white pixels embedded within black areas)<\/em>. This lead to significant flooding in many areas.
