{"id":40585,"date":"2021-04-11T17:43:26","date_gmt":"2021-04-11T17:43:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?p=40585"},"modified":"2021-04-12T14:04:33","modified_gmt":"2021-04-12T14:04:33","slug":"csppgeosphere-views-of-the-soufriere-eruption-on-11-april-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/40585","title":{"rendered":"CSPP GeoSphere views of the Soufriere Eruption on 11 April 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_40590\" style=\"width: 635px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/04\/G16TrueColor_1220_to_1600_11April2021_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40590\" class=\"wp-image-40590\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/04\/G16TrueColor_1220_11April2021_annot.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"290\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-40590\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-16 True Color Imagery, 1210-1600 UTC on 11 April 2021 (click to animate)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/geosphere.ssec.wisc.edu\/#coordinate:0,0;\">CSPP GeoSphere<\/a> allows a user to view True Color imagery (and individual GOES-16 bands) in real time using data from the four GOES-16 domains:\u00a0 Full Disk, CONUS, and Mesoscale Sectors 1 and 2.\u00a0 The animation above shows the 1330 UTC eruption (11 April 2021) of Soufriere, one of a series of eruptions from that volcano (as discussed <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/40572\">here <\/a>and elsewhere).\u00a0 The ash emitted by the short (duration) eruption then moves westward towards Barbados, following upper-level winds.\u00a0 (Low-level winds are easterly).\u00a0 The rapid ascent of the ash cloud is documented below, showing 4 images from the Full Disk imagery at 1320, 1330, 1340 and 1350 UTC.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_40591\" style=\"width: 635px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/04\/G16TrueColor_1320_to_1350_11April2021step.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40591\" class=\"wp-image-40591\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/04\/G16TrueColor_1320_to_1350_11April2021step.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"290\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-40591\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-16 True Color Imagery, at 1320, 1330, 1340 and 1350 UTC on 11 April 2021 (click to animate)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Rapid changes suggest Mesoscale imagery would be useful.\u00a0 Indeed, volcanic events area ranked #2 <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/04\/GOESR_MDS_PriorityList.png\">on the GOES-R MDS Priority List<\/a>, after only a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spc.noaa.gov\/\">SPC<\/a> High\/Moderate Risk for Severe weather.\u00a0 Thus, mesoscale Sector 2 imagery was available over the area.\u00a0 \u00a0That is shown below and it better captures the time of the eruption and better resolves the ascent through the troposphere.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_40588\" style=\"width: 635px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/04\/G16Meso2_1320_to_1347_11Apr2021_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40588\" class=\"wp-image-40588\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/04\/G16Meso2_1320_11Apr2021_annot.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"290\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-40588\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-16 Mesoscale sector 2 True Color Imagery, 1320-1347 UTC (Click to animate)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Seven consecutive zoomed-in 1-minute images are shown below, from 1329 through 1336 UTC on 11 April (with the map removed; CSPPGeo link used <a href=\"https:\/\/geosphere.ssec.wisc.edu\/#coordinate:1464660,1443134;zoom:9;coverage:radm2;map_borders:off;start_time:2021-04-11T13:25:00Z;timeframe:Start%20Time;\">here<\/a>; a similar animation from the CIRA Slider is <a href=\"https:\/\/rammb-slider.cira.colostate.edu\/?sat=goes-16&amp;sec=mesoscale_02&amp;x=1050&amp;y=980.6000366210938&amp;z=2&amp;angle=0&amp;im=12&amp;ts=1&amp;st=20210411132654&amp;et=20210411134754&amp;speed=130&amp;motion=loop&amp;maps%5Bborders%5D=white&amp;mhidden%5Bborders%5D=1&amp;lat=0&amp;p%5B0%5D=geocolor&amp;opacity%5B0%5D=1&amp;pause=20210411133054&amp;slider=-1&amp;hide_controls=1&amp;mouse_draw=0&amp;follow_feature=0&amp;follow_hide=0&amp;s=rammb-slider\">here<\/a>.) They show the initial stages of this particular eruption.\u00a0 A Pileus cap is obvious at the top of the eruption at 1329 UTC.
