{"id":391,"date":"2007-04-13T23:23:38","date_gmt":"2007-04-13T23:23:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/2007\/04\/14\/smoke-in-the-gulf-of-mexico-and-dust-in-the-gulf-of-california\/"},"modified":"2007-04-15T05:00:34","modified_gmt":"2007-04-15T05:00:34","slug":"smoke-in-the-gulf-of-mexico-and-dust-in-the-gulf-of-california","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/391","title":{"rendered":"Smoke in the Gulf of Mexico, and dust  in the Gulf of California"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"IDEA MODIS AOD\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/idea.ssec.wisc.edu\/20070413\/modL_20070413.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"480\" height=\"441\" align=\"middle\" title=\"IDEA MODIS AOD\" alt=\"IDEA MODIS AOD\" src=\"http:\/\/idea.ssec.wisc.edu\/20070413\/modL_20070413.png\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The MODIS Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) product  from the <a title=\"IDEA site\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/idea.ssec.wisc.edu\/\"><strong>IDEA<\/strong><\/a> site <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> showed elevated AOD values over the western Gulf of Mexico on <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"13 April 2007 daily weather map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20070413.html\"><strong>13 April 2007<\/strong><\/a>. This AOD signal (note the <em>hazy appearance<\/em> on <a title=\"MODIS true color imagery\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/eosdb.ssec.wisc.edu\/modisdirect\/terra\/calibratedImages\/2007\/103\/2007-04-13_1735-1747_USWE_010403_1KM.jpg\"><strong>MODIS true color imagery<\/strong><\/a>) was due to smoke from agricultural fires that had been burning the previous day in the Yucatan region of Mexico and  also in Guatemala. The CIMSS GOES-12 <a title=\"Wildfire ABBA product\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/burn\/wfabba.html\"><strong>Wildfire ABBA<\/strong><\/a> product <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> indicated an increasing number of fire pixels in that area on 12 April; the <a title=\"NOAA HMS product\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/04\/hms20070412.jpg\"><strong>NOAA Hazard Mapping System (HMS)<\/strong><\/a> daily composite from that day also exhibited a significant number of fire pixels in that region (with a large smoke pall drifting over the Gulf of Mexico). A second area of elevated MODIS AOD values was observed over the Gulf of California (<a title=\"MODIS true color image\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/eosdb.ssec.wisc.edu\/modisdirect\/terra\/calibratedImages\/2007\/103\/2007-04-13_1735-1747_NMEX_010403_1KM.jpg\"><strong>MODIS true color image<\/strong><\/a>) &#8212; this particular AOD signal was due to airborne dust that was lofted into the lower  troposphere by strong winds <em>(gusting as high as 86 mph in southern California)<\/em> associated with a large storm system that was intensifying across the southern Rockies and southern Plains. A <a title=\"GOES-12 visible images (QuickTime animation)\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/04\/070413_g12_vis.mov\"><em><strong>QuickTime animation<\/strong><\/em><\/a> of GOES-12 visible channel images indicated that the dust in the Gulf of California was being transported southward, while the smoke in the Gulf of Mexico was being transported northward.<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" title=\"CIMSS Wildfire ABBA product\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/04\/070412_wfabba.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"480\" height=\"517\" align=\"middle\" title=\"CIMSS Wildfire ABBA product\" id=\"image389\" alt=\"CIMSS Wildfire ABBA product\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/04\/070412_wfabba.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The MODIS Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) product from the IDEA site (above) showed elevated AOD values over the western Gulf of Mexico on 13 April 2007.
