Visible <em>(0.64 \u00b5m)<\/em> and Dust RGB images [click to play animation | <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2020\/10\/201020_goes17_visible_dustRGB_AK_anim.mp4\"><strong>MP4<\/strong><\/a>]<\/p><\/div>Strong gap winds accelerating out of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Copper_River_%28Alaska%29\"><strong>Copper River<\/strong><\/a> Valley along the southern coast of Alaska were lofting fine particles of glacial silt\/sand and transporting those aerosols southward across the Gulf of Alaska on 20 October 2020. 1-minute\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/23225\"><strong>Mesoscale Domain Sector<\/strong><\/a> GOES-17 <em>(GOES-West)<\/em> &#8220;Red&#8221; Visible (<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_Band02.pdf\"><strong>0.64 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>) and <a href=\"http:\/\/rammb.cira.colostate.edu\/training\/visit\/quick_guides\/Dust_RGB_Quick_Guide.pdf\"><strong>Dust<\/strong><\/a> Red-Green-Blue (RGB) images<em><strong> (above)<\/strong><\/em> displayed the plume of airborne dust during the period of 1700-2300 UTC.<\/p>\n<p>A good visualization of the dust plume was provided by GOES-17 True Color RGB images created using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/software\/geo2grid\/\"><strong>Geo2Grid<\/strong><\/a> <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 652px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"thumbnail\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2020\/10\/201020_goes17_trueColorRGB_AK_dust_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2020\/10\/GOES-17_ABI_RadF_true_color_2020294_211031Z.png\" alt=\"GOES-17 True Color RGB images [click to play animation | MP4]\" width=\"642\" height=\"642\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-17 True Color RGB images [click to play animation | <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2020\/10\/201020_goes17_trueColorRGB_AK_dust_anim.mp4\"><strong>MP4<\/strong><\/a>]<\/p><\/div>A comparison of Suomi NPP VIIRS Visible (0.64 \u00b5m), Shortwave Infrared (3.74 \u00b5m) and Infrared Window (11.45 \u00b5m) images at 2040 UTC is shown below &#8212;
