<\/a>GOES-16 \u201cRed\u201d Visible (0.64 \u00b5m)<\/em> and \u201cClean\u201d Infrared Window (10.35 \u00b5m)<\/em> images (with and without an overlay of GLM Flash Extent Density) [click to play animation | MP4<\/strong><\/a>]<\/p><\/div>1-minute\u00a0Mesoscale Domain Sector<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0GOES-16\u00a0(GOES-East)<\/em>\u00a0\u201cRed\u201d Visible (0.64 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>) and\u00a0\u201cClean\u201d Infrared Window (10.35 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>) images \u2014 with and without an overlay of\u00a0GLM<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0Flash Extent Density<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(above)<\/strong><\/em> showed the rapid development of thunderstorms along a cold front across eastern South Dakota on 30 August 2020<\/strong><\/a>. One particularly well-defined and long-lived Enhanced-V<\/strong><\/a> signature with an Above-Anvil Cirrus Plume (reference<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0|\u00a0VISIT training<\/strong><\/a>) was seen in the Visible and Infrared imagery, which extended northeastward from the core of a thunderstorm where large hail and tornadoes were occurring.<\/p>\n GOES-16 \u201cRed\u201d Visible (0.64 \u00b5m)<\/em> images, with time-matched SPC Storm Reports plotted in red [click to play animation | MP4<\/strong><\/a>]<\/p><\/div>1-minute GOES-16 Visible images with time-matched plots of SPC Storm Reports<\/strong><\/a> are displayed above, with the corresponding Infrared images below.<\/p>\n GOES-16 \u201cClean\u201d Infrared Window (10.35 \u00b5m)<\/em> images, with time-matched SPC Storm Reports plotted in cyan [click to play animation | MP4<\/strong><\/a>]<\/p><\/div>There were some overshooting tops which exhibited infrared brightness temperatures as cold as -72\u00baC — a plot of 00 UTC rawinsonde data from Aberdeen, South Dakota (below)<\/strong><\/em> indicated that this was about 7\u00baC colder than the tropopause temperature of -66.1\u00baC.<\/p>\n<\/a><\/a>
