GOES-16 \u201cRed\u201d Visible (0.64 \u00b5m)<\/em> and \u201cClean\u201d Infrared Window (10.35 \u00b5m)<\/em> images [click to play animation | MP4<\/strong><\/a>]<\/p><\/div>1-minute\u00a0Mesoscale Domain Sector<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0GOES-16\u00a0(GOES-East)<\/em>\u00a0\u201cRed\u201d Visible (0.64 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>) and\u00a0\u201cClean\u201d Infrared Window (10.35 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>) images (above)<\/strong> <\/em>showed Laura<\/strong><\/a> during the the 12-hour period after it intensified from a Tropical Storm to a Hurricane in the southern Gulf of Mexico at 1215 UTC on 25 August 2020. Numerous convective overshooting tops were observed, some exhibiting cloud-top infrared brightness temperatures as cold as -87\u00baC.<\/p>\n

A comparison of NOAA-20 MiRS<\/strong><\/a> Microwave (88 GHz), GOES-16 “Red” Visible (0.64 \u00b5m) and GOES-16 “Clean” Infrared Window (10.35 \u00b5m) images at 1851 UTC (below)<\/strong> <\/em>revealed a curved convective band wrapping around the eye of Laura.<\/p>\n

NOAA-20 MiRS Microwave (88 GHz),<\/em> GOES-16 “Red” Visible (0.64 \u00b5m)<\/em> and GOES-16 “Clean” Infrared Window (10.35 \u00b5m)<\/em> images at 1851 UTC [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>In a toggle between Infrared Window images from Suomi NPP (11.45 \u00b5m) and GOES-16 (10.35 \u00b5m) at 1943 UTC (below),<\/strong><\/em> the coldest cloud-top infrared brightness temperature was -91.9\u00baC in the Suomi NPP image (compared to -87.0\u00baC on the GOES-16 image). The northwestward parallax displacement<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0associated with GOES-16 imagery over the southern Gulf of Mexico was also apparent.<\/p>\n
