(Wind shear is from <a href=\"http:\/\/tropic.ssec.wisc.edu\/\">this website<\/a>, (<a href=\"http:\/\/tropic.ssec.wisc.edu\/real-time\/windmain.php?&amp;basin=atlantic&amp;sat=wg8&amp;prod=shr&amp;zoom=&amp;time=\">direct link to shear<\/a>); the product is described <a href=\"http:\/\/tropic.ssec.wisc.edu\/misc\/winds\/info.winds.shr.html\">here<\/a>)\u00a0 An inhibiting feature in strengthening, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/archive\/2020\/al14\/al142020.discus.008.shtml?\">as noted in the National Hurricane Center discussion<\/a>, is stable air.<\/p>\n<p>NOAA-20 overflew Marco shortly before 0700 UTC on 22 August, and NUCAPS soundings derived from CrIS and ATMS data on NOAA-20 showed the stable mid-tropospheric air surrounding the storm. The 850-500 mb lapse rates were around 5.5 C\/km. (Gridded NUCAPS data can also be viewed <a href=\"https:\/\/weather.msfc.nasa.gov\/cgi-bin\/sportPublishData.pl?dataset=griddednucaps&amp;product=web14c_LR850.png&amp;stamp=20200822_0651&amp;loc=caribbean#image\">here<\/a>) Individual soundings over <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/08\/WesternCubaSounding.png\">western Cuba<\/a> and just off the <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/08\/NWYucatanSounding.png\">northwest tip of the Yucatan peninsula<\/a> also show the relatively stable air.
