{"id":378,"date":"2007-03-29T23:58:25","date_gmt":"2007-03-29T23:58:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/2007\/03\/28\/severe-weather-outbreak-in-the-plains\/"},"modified":"2008-03-11T21:10:59","modified_gmt":"2008-03-11T21:10:59","slug":"severe-weather-outbreak-in-the-plains","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/378","title":{"rendered":"Severe weather outbreak in the Plains"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/03\/070329_05z_modis_ir_msas_streamlines_zoom.jpg\" title=\"AWIPS IR image with lightning data and surface winds\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/03\/070329_05z_modis_ir_msas_streamlines_zoom.jpg\" title=\"AWIPS IR image with lightning and surface winds\" alt=\"AWIPS IR image with lightning and surface winds\" align=\"middle\" height=\"465\" width=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A major outbreak of severe convection developed across the southern and central Plains states during the day on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20070328.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"28 March 2007 daily weather map\"><strong>28 March<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20070329.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"29 March 2007 daily weather map\"><strong>29 March 2007<\/strong><\/a>; large and long-lived thunderstorms produced widespread tornadoes (<strong>including fatal tornadoes in Texas and Oklahoma, and the first tornado-related fatality in Colorado<\/strong> <strong>since 1960<\/strong>), large hail (<strong>up to 4.5 inches in diameter in Texas<\/strong>), and damaging winds (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.spc.noaa.gov\/climo\/reports\/070328_rpts.html\" title=\"SPC storm reports\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>28 March SPC storm reports<\/strong><\/a>). An AWIPS image of the <strong>MODIS 11.0\u00c2\u00b5m InfraRed <em>(&#8220;IR window&#8221;)<\/em>  channel<\/strong> with overlays of cloud-to-ground lightning strikes and surface wind streamlines <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em>  shows the large density of lightning strikes <em>(1587 negative strikes and 61 positive strikes in a 15-minute period)<\/em> that was generally aligned along a cold frontal boundary that was moving eastward across the Texas panhandle region. If we examine the MODIS IR image without any overlays <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>, we see that there were 2 examples of a subtle  <em>&#8220;warm trench&#8221;<\/em> signature (a ring of <em>warmer<\/em> cloud top temperatures surrounding the coldest temperatures associated with the overshooting tops) &#8212; this satellite signature suggests that there may have been some compensating subsidence immediately surrounding the vigorous overshooting tops as they penetrated the tropopause level.
