The red square denotes the\u00a0 approximate location of Mount St. Helens, and the arrows highlight the plumes of the two separate eruptions.\u00a0 [Click to play mp4]<\/p><\/div> <p>The main Mount St. Helens eruption was <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/36701\">May 18, 1980<\/a>\u00a0&#8212; yet there were also later <a href=\"https:\/\/agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/epdf\/10.1029\/JC087iC13p11153\">paroxysmal<\/a> eruptions. Imagery from NASA&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Synchronous_Meteorological_Satellite\">SMS-2<\/a> (Synchronous Meteorological Satellite) monitored two more Mount St. Helens eruptions on June 12th (local time), 1980, as shown above. Note that in &#8220;UTC-time&#8221;, the eruption took place on June 13th. The second plume coated <a href=\"https:\/\/pastdaily.com\/2017\/06\/13\/june-13-1980-mt-st-helens-kind-day\/\">Portland (OR) with ash<\/a>. Here&#8217;s the same loop and <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2020\/06\/SMS_VIS_MTSTHELENS_ZOOM_B1_1980165_033000_SMS-2_0001PANEL_FRAME00016.GIF\">image<\/a>, but without the red location box.<\/p> <p>The volcanic ash plume was also evident in the infrared window band, below, but the imagery has fairly coarse spatial (and temporal) resolution compared to today&#8217;s GOES-R series <a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/goesdata.html\">ABI<\/a>\u00a0(which allows much improved <a href=\"https:\/\/volcano.ssec.wisc.edu\/\">volcanic cloud monitoring<\/a>).
