{"id":365,"date":"2007-02-14T20:05:06","date_gmt":"2007-02-14T20:05:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/2007\/02\/14\/ice-chunks-in-lake-michigan\/"},"modified":"2007-02-19T15:25:10","modified_gmt":"2007-02-19T15:25:10","slug":"ice-floes-in-lake-michigan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/365","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Ice Floes&#8221; in Lake Michigan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a target=\"_blank\" title=\"GOES-12 visible image\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/02\/070214_G12_VIS_10.GIF\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" align=\"middle\" alt=\"GOES-12 visible image\" title=\"GOES-12 visible image\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/02\/070214_G12_VIS_10.GIF\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>GOES-12 visible imagery <em><strong>(above; <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"GOES-12 visible images (Java animation)\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/02\/070214_g12_vis.html\">Java animation<\/a>)<\/strong><\/em> revealed several large <a title=\"ice floe (wikipedia)\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sea_ice\"><strong>&#8220;ice floes&#8221;<\/strong><\/a> that were moving rapidly southwestward across southern Lake Michigan on <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"14 February 2007 daily weather map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20070214.html\"><strong>14 February 2007<\/strong><\/a>. Strong northeasterly winds associated with an intense winter storm in the northeastern US were likely breaking large pieces of &#8220;fast ice&#8221; from the Michigan shore and causing them to drift toward the southern end of Lake Michigan. A well-defined  cloud band can also be seen to the west of the ice floes &#8212; this feature produced 1-3 inches of lake-effect snowfall as it moved inland across northeastern Illinois and northwestern Indiana. 250-meter resolution MODIS true color imagery <em><strong>(below; <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"MODIS true color images (Java animation)\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/02\/070214_lake_ice.html\">Java animation<\/a>)<\/strong><\/em> shows these ice features with better clarity than the 1-km resolution GOES-12 imagery.<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" title=\"Terra MODIS true color image\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/02\/2007-02-14_1658-1710_HCHI_010403_QKM.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"480\" height=\"370\" align=\"middle\" alt=\"Terra MODIS true color image\" title=\"Terra MODIS true color image\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/02\/2007-02-14_1658-1710_HCHI_010403_QKM.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GOES-12 visible imagery (above; Java animation) revealed several large &#8220;ice floes&#8221; that were moving rapidly southwestward across southern Lake Michigan on 14 February 2007.
