The Clean Window imagery shows a flat region between 30\u00ba N and 40\u00ba N around 140\u00ba W. The Night Fog Brightness temperature difference shows a signal &#8212; cyan &#8212; in that region consistent with low stratus. The <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/02\/NightTimeMicrophysics-20200206_120559.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Night Microphysics RGB<\/a> (shown <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/02\/NightFog_NightTimeMicrophysics-20200206_120559_toggle.gif\">here<\/a> in a toggle with <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/02\/NightFogBTD-20200206_120559.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Night Fog Brightness Temperature<\/a>) shows a strong signal there as well (with some noise that can be attributed to Loop Heat Pipe issues with the GOES-17 ABI).<\/p>\n<p>NOAA-20 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/datacenter\/NOAA20\/HAWAII2020_02_06_037.gif\">overflew this region around 1200 UTC on 6 February<\/a> (Click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/datacenter\/NOAA20\/\">this link<\/a> to see all NOAA-20 orbit paths).\u00a0 The Gridded NUCAPS field of the 900-700 mb Lapse Rate shows small values (around 2\u00ba for a temperature change, the darker cyan color in the enhancement), as might be expected over the stratus deck.\u00a0 Note also how the air mass is less stable in the cold air behind the front (yellow and orange in the enhancement to the west west of the front, green to the east of the front).\u00a0 Gridded NUCAPS data are created with all vertical retrievals.\u00a0 The toggle with NUCAPS Vertical sounding points (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/02\/LapseRate900-700-withNUCAPSPoints-20200206_120559toggle.gif\">here<\/a>), shows how the profiles that failed to converge (i.e., red and yellow points) can affect the gridded fields.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_35561\" style=\"width: 635px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/02\/LapseRate900-700-20200206_120559.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35561\" class=\"wp-image-35561\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/02\/LapseRate900-700-20200206_120559.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"606\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/02\/LapseRate900-700-20200206_120559.png 997w, https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/02\/LapseRate900-700-20200206_120559-300x291.png 300w, https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2020\/02\/LapseRate900-700-20200206_120559-768x745.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-35561\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gridded Lapse Rate, 900-700 mb, 1205 UTC on 6 February 2020 (Click to enlarge)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GOES-17 ABI Imagery on 6 February suggests the presence of a cold front over the Pacific Ocean northeast of Hawaii.
