GOES-16<em> (GOES-East)<\/em> images of Low-level (<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_Band10.pdf\"><strong>7.3 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>), Mid-level (<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_Band09.pdf\"><strong>6.9 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>) and Upper-level Water Vapor (<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_Band08.pdf\"><strong>6.2 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>) and <a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_SplitWindowDifference.pdf\"><strong>Split Window Difference<\/strong><\/a> (10.3-12.3 \u00b5m) <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> showed a higher-altitude ash plume moving rapidly south-southeastward, while ash at a lower altitude moved slowly north-northeastward.<\/p>\n<p>The difference in speed and direction of ash transport was explained by plots of rawinsonde data from Mexico City and Acapulco at 12 UTC <em><strong>(below)<\/strong>,<\/em> which revealed stronger northwesterly winds within the 200-250 hPa pressure layer, with lighter southerly to southwesterly winds existing between 400 and 600 hPa.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 653px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2020\/01\/200109_12UTC_MMMX_MMAA_RAOBS.GIF\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2020\/01\/200109_12UTC_MMMX_MMAA_RAOBS.GIF\" alt=\"Plots of rawinsonde data from Mexico City and Acapulco at 12 UTC [click to enlarge]\" width=\"643\" height=\"483\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Plots of rawinsonde data from Mexico City <em>(yellow)<\/em> and Acapulco<em> (cyan)<\/em> at 12 UTC [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>At 1402 UTC a <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/23225\"><strong>Mesoscale Domain Sector<\/strong><\/a> was positioned over Mexico &#8212;
