The banner cloud was formed by anomalously-strong southwesterly winds (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2019\/12\/191222_12utc_925hpa_wind_anom.png\"><strong>925 hPa<\/strong><\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2019\/12\/191222_12utc_250hpa_wind_anom.png\"><strong>250 hPa<\/strong><\/a>) interacting with the high terrain of Southern California&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Transverse_Ranges\"><strong>Transverse Ranges<\/strong><\/a>. At the surface, <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2019\/12\/191222_khnx_klox_pns.text\"><strong>wind gusts<\/strong><\/a> as high as 86 mph were observed.<\/p>\n<p>Within the banner cloud, the coldest GOES-17 Infrared brightness temperatures were in the -60 to -65\u00baC range &#8212; according to rawinsonde data from Vandenberg, California <em><strong>(below)<\/strong>,<\/em> those temperatures corresponded to altitudes in the 12-15 km range.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 647px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2019\/12\/191222_12utc_kvbg_raob.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/images\/2019\/12\/191222_12utc_kvbg_raob.png\" alt=\"12 UTC rawinsonde data from Vandenberg, California [click to enlarge]\" width=\"637\" height=\"449\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">12 UTC rawinsonde data from Vandenberg, California [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A sequence of GOES-17 (GOES-West) Low-level (7.3 \u00b5m), Mid-level (6.9 \u00b5m), Upper-level (6.2 \u00b5m) Water Vapor and &#8220;Clean&#8221; Infrared Window (10.35 \u00b5m) images (above) showed a long-lived orographic banner cloud that formed in Southern California and extended about 200 miles to the northeast across southern Nevada on 22 December 2019.
