These strong winds were associated with flow around a deepening Storm Force low that was moving from the Gulf of Alaska to the Bering Sea (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/12\/191209_surface_analyses_AK_anim.gif\"><strong>surface analyses<\/strong><\/a>). Downsloping (southeasterly) chinook winds (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/12\/191209_panc_topo.png\">topography<\/a><\/strong>) caused the air  temperature at Anchorage International Airport (PANC) to rise to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/12\/191209_panc_observations.png\">51\u00baF<\/a><\/strong>** at 2200 UTC (11:00 am local time) &#8212; which set a new record high for the month of December at that site (** the 5-minute ASOS temperatures are reported in \u00baC &#8212; and rounding errors caused the converted temperature to be listed as 52\u00baF).<br \/>\n<center><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">McHugh Creek observing station along the Seward Highway south of Potter Marsh reported a wind gust to 113 mph at 8:50am! The High Wind Warning has been adjusted to account for these higher-than-expected gusts. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/AKwx?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#AKwx<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The warning text can be found here: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5Jjc11brlj\">https:\/\/t.co\/5Jjc11brlj<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 NWS Anchorage (@NWSAnchorage) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NWSAnchorage\/status\/1204111056731172864?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 9, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\n<\/center><br \/>\nThe Storm Force low was also helping to advect an atmospheric river of moisture northward toward south-central Alaska, which was depicted in hourly images of the <a href=\"http:\/\/tropic.ssec.wisc.edu\/real-time\/mtpw2\/product.php?color_type=tpw_nrl_colors&amp;prod=global2&amp;timespan=24hrs&amp;anim=html5\"><strong>MIMIC Total Precipitable Water<\/strong><\/a> product <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>.
