Corresponding <a title=\"GOES-12 IR image\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/01\/070129_G12_IR4.GIF\"><strong>GOES-12 10.7 \u00b5m InfraRed (IR) imagery<\/strong><\/a> showed that cloud-top infrared brightness temperatures over that region were generally between -20\u00ba and -35\u00ba C; as aircraft (likely <a title=\"KDFW flightaware.com image\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/01\/kdfw_flightaware.com.jpg\"><strong>air traffic to\/from Dallas-Fort Worth airport KDFW<\/strong><\/a>) penetrated that cloud layer, they caused the supercooled cloud droplets to glaciate and begin to fall out of the cloud (causing the &#8220;holes&#8221; and &#8220;streaks&#8221; that were evident on the visible imagery).<\/p>\n<p>Higher-resolution views of these cloud features were available from <a title=\"Terra MODIS true color image (from Rapidfire)\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/01\/070129_modis_rapidfire.jpg\"><strong>Terra MODIS<\/strong><\/a> (sourced from the <a title=\"NASA Rapidfire site\" href=\"http:\/\/rapidfire.sci.gsfc.nasa.gov\/realtime\/2007029\/\"><strong>NASA Rapidfire<\/strong><\/a> site) and Aqua MODIS True Color Red-Green-Blue (RGB) images<em><strong> (below)<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 649px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/eosweb.ssec.wisc.edu\/browse_images\/aqua\/2007\/029\/2007-01-29_1839-1851_GUCO_010403_HKM.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/eosweb.ssec.wisc.edu\/browse_images\/aqua\/2007\/029\/2007-01-29_1839-1851_GUCO_010403_HKM.jpg\" alt=\"Aqua MODIS True Color RGB image [click to enlarge]\" width=\"639\" height=\"494\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aqua MODIS True Color RGB image [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>12 UTC rawinsonde data from Fort Worth, Texas <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> indicated that the likely elevation of the supercooled cloud deck was around 25,000 feet.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 649px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a title=\"Fort Worth TX rawinsonde report\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/01\/070129_12z_kfwd_raob.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Fort Worth TX rawinsonde report\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/01\/070129_12z_kfwd_raob.jpg\" alt=\"Fort Worth TX rawinsonde report\" width=\"639\" height=\"619\" align=\"middle\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Plot of 12 UTC Fort Worth TX rawinsonde data<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GOES-12 visible channel images (above) revealed numerous aircraft dissipation trails &#8212; otherwise known as &#8220;distrails&#8221; or &#8220;hole punch clouds&#8221; &#8212; during the day over eastern Texas, northern Louisiana, southern Arkansas, and Mississippi on 29 January 2007.
