AWIPS images of the GOES-12 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR Window channel <strong><em>(above)<\/em><\/strong> showed that the cloud top IR brightness temperatures were rather unremarkable, with only a few areas exhibiting temperatures colder than <strong>-50\u00c2\u00ba C<\/strong> <em>(yellow color enhancement)<\/em> during the heavy rainfall event. The 1-km resolution <a title=\"AVHRR Cloud Top Temperature product\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/09\/AVHRR_CTT_20090922_1446.png\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>AVHRR Cloud Top Temperature<\/strong><\/a> values were only slightly colder, at <strong>-54\u00c2\u00ba C<\/strong> &#8212; this corresponded to a <a title=\"AVHRR Cloud Top Height product\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/09\/AVHRR_CLD_HGT_20090922_1446.png\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>AVHRR Cloud Top Height<\/strong><\/a> of 11-12 km.<\/p>\n<p>GOES-12 visible images <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> did not show any pronounced cloud top texture or shadowing that would indicate strong convective elements over southern Wisconsin &#8212; in fact, there were <strong>no<\/strong> cloud-to-ground lightning strikes seen during the day, and no thunder was reported at any of the first order observing stations.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/09\/090922_g12_vis_anim.gif\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"GOES-12 visible images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/09\/090922_g12_vis_anim.gif\" alt=\"GOES-12 visible images\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-12 visible images<\/p><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/09\/090922_btpw_anim.gif\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"Blended Total Precipitable Water product\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/09\/090922_btpw_anim.gif\" alt=\"Blended Total Precipitable Water product\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Blended Total Precipitable Water product<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Blended Total Precipitable Water (TPW) product <strong><em>(above)<\/em><\/strong> did reveal that an area of TPW values of 40 mm and greater <em>(red colors)<\/em> developed across northern Illinois and far eastern Iowa  after about 08 UTC &#8212; this seemed to be associated with a disturbance that developed and moved northward along and ahead of a frontal boundary that was moving slowly eastward across the region. It should be noted that these TPW values were about <a title=\"TPW 175-200% above normal\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/09\/Pct_of_Normal_TPW_20090922_1128.png\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>175-200% above normal<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, about 5 hours earlier the MODIS TPW product displayed TPW values of 40 mm and higher <em>(red colors)<\/em> over parts of northwestern Illinois, at a time when the Blended TPW product was still only indicating TPW values of 30-35 mm <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong>. This area of higher TPW values over northern Illinois was then <a title=\"Blended TPW + 0-6km layer winds\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/09\/NAM12_0-6kmAgl_Wind_20090922_1200F000.png\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>advected northward<\/strong><\/a> during the day, and lifted along and ahead of a developing <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/09\/090922_15z_surface.jpg\">warm frontal boundary<\/a><\/strong>. A <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/09\/NAM12_lineA__Omega_Img_20090922_1800F000.png\">cross section<\/a><\/strong> oriented north to south showed a deep column of upward vertical motion <em>(omega values of 10 \u00c2\u00b5bars per second, red colors)<\/em> over southern Wisconsin.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/09\/090922_modispw_btpw_anim.gif\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"Blended TPW + MODIS TPW products\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/09\/090922_modispw_btpw_anim.gif\" alt=\"Blended TPW + MODIS TPW products\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Blended TPW + MODIS TPW products<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Madison, Wisconsin received 3.63 inches (92 mm) of rainfall on 22 September 2009 &#8212; much of it within a 4 hour period &#8212; which set a record for the highest rainfall amount for any day during the month of September (additional details are available from the NWS Milwaukee\/Sullivan).
