images <em><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2007\/01\/modis_msn_lakes.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Series of MODIS true color images (Java animation)\"><strong>(Java animation)<\/strong><\/a><\/em> shows the transition from a dismal &#8220;brown Christmas&#8221; in December 2006 <em><strong>(above<\/strong><\/em>;<em> December had an average monthly temperature of 30.5\u00c2\u00ba F, or 7.5\u00c2\u00ba F above normal)<\/em>&#8230;to snow cover in mid-January 2007 <em>(3-inch snow depth with  overnight minimum temperatures of -3\u00c2\u00ba F at Madison on 16-17 January)<\/em>&#8230;to frozen lakes and 5 inches of snow cover  at Madison on 25 January 2007 <em><strong>(below).<\/strong><\/em> According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aos.wisc.edu\/%7Esco\/lakes\/msnicesum.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Wisconsin State Climatology Office\"><strong>Wisconsin State Climatology Office<\/strong><\/a> site, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lake_Mendota\" title=\"Lake Mendota\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Lake Mendota<\/strong><\/a> <em>(the largest of the four lakes in the immediate Madison vicinity)<\/em> officially froze completely on 20 January 2007 &#8212;
