A person attempting to navigate from Grand Portage, Minnesota &#8212; located northeast of Grand Marais Airport, identifier KCKC &#8212; to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Isle_Royale\"><strong>Isle Royale<\/strong><\/a> became lost in the fog and eventually ran out of fuel (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtip.org\/stranded-jet-skier-rescued-south-isle-royale?fbclid=IwAR3eX6DkVkAG6R4r677MCrK9mozfutTwAffK1EZLxtGeVsNL59TcichNd98\"><strong>media story<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Possibly compounding the fog-related visibility problem, GOES-16 Natural Color Red-Green-Blue (RGB) images<em><strong> (below)<\/strong> <\/em>revealed that dense <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/33690\"><strong>smoke from Canadian wildfires<\/strong><\/a> was lingering and also recirculating slowly northward across Lake Superior; this smoke occasionally reduced the surface visibility to 4 miles at Houghton, Michigan (identifier <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/07\/190708_KCMX_SFCMG.GIF\"><strong>KCMX<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 651px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/07\/190708_goes16_naturalcolor_Lake_Superior_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/07\/1080x1080_AGOES16_B1_SHCS_V2_FOG_IsleRoyale_2019189_170130.GIF\" alt=\"GOES-16 Natural Color RGB images [click to play animation | MP4]\" width=\"641\" height=\"641\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-16 Natural Color RGB images [click to play animation | <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/07\/190708_goes16_naturalcolor_Lake_Superior_anim.mp4\"><strong>MP4<\/strong><\/a>]<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GOES-16 (GOES-East) &#8220;Red&#8221; Visible (0.64 \u00b5m) images (above) showed narrow ribbons of fog over the northwestern portion of Lake Superior on 08 July 2019.
