{"id":3202,"date":"2009-08-10T23:59:21","date_gmt":"2009-08-10T23:59:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?p=3202"},"modified":"2010-05-20T20:12:16","modified_gmt":"2010-05-20T20:12:16","slug":"unusual-august-ice-in-hudson-bay-and-james-bay-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/3202","title":{"rendered":"Unusual August ice concentration in Hudson Bay and James Bay, Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 488px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/08\/090810_modis_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"MODIS true color and false color images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/08\/090810_modis_anim.gif\" alt=\"MODIS true color and false color images\" width=\"478\" height=\"369\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS true color and false color images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A comparison of MODIS &#8220;true color&#8221; and &#8220;false color&#8221; Red\/Green\/Blue (RGB) images <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> showed that significant amounts of ice remained in parts of southern Hudson Bay and northern James Bay in Canada on <a title=\"10 August 2009 daily weather map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20090810.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>10 August 2009<\/strong><\/a>. On the true color RGB image <em>(using MODIS bands 01\/04\/03),<\/em> the ice did not appear as as bright as the surrounding clouds, and had a slightly &#8220;light blue&#8221; appearance<em>.<\/em> On the\u00c2\u00a0 false color RGB image <em>(using MODIS bands 02\/07\/07),<\/em> the ice <em>(along with clouds that were composed of ice crystals)<\/em> exhibited a darker red appearance, in contrast to the cyan to white colored supercooled water droplet clouds.<\/p>\n<p>Also note the hazy appearance over parts of Ontario, just to the west of James Bay: this was due to smoke aloft from recent fire activity in Alaska and the Yukon Territory.<\/p>\n<p>A map of the departure from normal ice concentration <em><strong>(below, <\/strong>courtesy of the<strong> <a title=\"Canadian Ice Service\" href=\"http:\/\/ice-glaces.ec.gc.ca\/App\/WsvPageDsp.cfm?ID=1&amp;Lang=eng&amp;Clear=true\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian Ice Service<\/a>)<\/strong><\/em> indicated that there were large areas where the ice\u00c2\u00a0 was in the 7\/10ths to 10\/10ths range <strong>above<\/strong> the normal concentration for the date <em>(darker blue colors)<\/em>.
