{"id":31687,"date":"2019-02-08T18:59:58","date_gmt":"2019-02-08T18:59:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?p=31687"},"modified":"2019-02-10T15:53:59","modified_gmt":"2019-02-10T15:53:59","slug":"cold-temperatures-in-montana-and-north-dakota","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/31687","title":{"rendered":"Cold temperatures in Montana and North Dakota"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"thumbnail\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/02\/190208_goes16_infrared_MT_ND_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/02\/mt_nd_g16_ir-20190208_140213.png\" alt=\"GOES-16 \" width=\"640\" height=\"367\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-16 &#8220;Clean&#8221; Infrared Window<em> (10.3 \u00b5m)<\/em> images, with hourly plots of surface reports [click to play animation | <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/02\/190208_goes16_infrared_MT_ND_anim.mp4\"><strong>MP4<\/strong><\/a>]<\/p><\/div>Very cold surface air temperatures occurred in northeastern Montana and northwestern North Dakota on the morning of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20190208.html\"><strong>08 February 2019<\/strong><\/a> &#8212; with official lows of -50\u00baF near Antelope and Four Buttes in Montana and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/02\/190208_kbis_rtp.text\">-47\u00baF<\/a><\/strong> at Bottineau in North Dakota (and according to MesoWest, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/02\/190208_MT_ND_24hour_minimum_temperatures.png\">-49\u00baF<\/a><\/strong> was registered at a Department of Transportation site <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mesowest.utah.edu\/cgi-bin\/droman\/meso_base_dyn.cgi?product=&#038;past=1&#038;stn=ND007&#038;unit=0&#038;time=LOCAL&#038;day1=8&#038;month1=02&#038;year1=2019&#038;hour1=9\">west of Crosby<\/a><\/strong> in far northwestern North Dakota). GOES-16 <em>(GOES-East)<\/em> &#8220;Clean&#8221; Infrared Window (<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_Band13.pdf\"><strong>10.3 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>) images<em><strong> (above)<\/strong><\/em> revealed surface brightness temperatures across those areas were as cold as -47\u00baC (-53\u00baF).<\/p>\n<p>A sequence of VIIRS Infrared Window (11.45 \u00b5m) images from Suomi NPP and NOAA-20 <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed similar surface brightness temperatures, with some pixels as cold as -48\u00baC (-54\u00baF). The color enhancement applied to the VIIRS images is the same as that used on the GOES-16 images above, with the red colors beginning at the -40\u00baC breakpoint (violets begin at -50\u00baC).
