The blowing snow originating over the southern portion of Lake Manitoba was then then channeled southward into the Red River Valley (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/01\/mb_viirs_topo-20190115_200914.png\"><strong>topography<\/strong><\/a>), with horizontal convective roll clouds eventually developing.<\/p>\n<p>In a sequence of MODIS Visible (0.65 \u00b5m) and Snow\/Ice (1.61 \u00b5m) images from Terra and Aqua in addition to VIIRS Visible (0.64 \u00b5m) and Snow\/Ice (1.61 \u00b5m) from NOAA-20 and Suomi NPP <em><strong>(below)<\/strong>,<\/em> the plumes of blowing snow were also easier to detect in the Snow\/Ice images (due to better contrast against the existing snow cover).<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 649px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/01\/190115_modis_viirs_visible_snowIce_MB_ND_MN_blowing_snow_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/01\/190115_modis_viirs_visible_snowIce_MB_ND_MN_blowing_snow_anim.gif\" alt=\"MODIS Visible (0.65 \u00b5m) and Snow\/Ice (1.61 \u00b5m) images from Terra and Aqua plus VIIRS Visible (0.64 \u00b5m) and Snow\/Ice (1.61 \u00b5m) from NOAA-20 and Suomi NPP [click to enlarge]\" width=\"639\" height=\"366\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS Visible<em> (0.65 \u00b5m)<\/em> and Snow\/Ice <em>(1.61 \u00b5m)<\/em> images from Terra and Aqua plus VIIRS Visible <em>(0.64 \u00b5m)<\/em> and Snow\/Ice <em>(1.61 \u00b5m)<\/em> from NOAA-20 and Suomi NPP [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>A closer view of the Lake Manitoba plume is shown below;
