Light to moderate Freezing Rain was reported at Watertown SD (KATY) for 3.5 consecutive hours (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/01\/181230_181231_KATY_SFCMG.GIF\"><strong>plot<\/strong><\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/01\/181231_KATY_OBS.TEXT\"><strong>text<\/strong><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>As seen in a plot of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goes-r.gov\/spacesegment\/abi.html\"><strong>ABI<\/strong><\/a> Spectral Response Functions <em><strong>(below)<\/strong>,<\/em> snow and ice are efficient absorbers of radiation (and therefore exhibit a low relectance) at the 1.61 \u00b5m wavelength, making them appear <strong>darker<\/strong> on the Snow\/Ice imagery &#8212; and since ice absorbs more strongly than snow, it appears as the darkest shades of gray\/black. <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/01\/181231_wind_reports.text\"><strong>Strong northerly winds<\/strong><\/a> in the wake of the precipitation event then swept the residual ice-crusted snow cover clear of any new snowfall.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/01\/ABI_Bands1-5_SRF.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/01\/ABI_Bands1-5_SRF.jpg\" alt=\"Plots of Spectral Response Function for ABI Bands 1-5 [click to enlarge]\" width=\"640\" height=\"256\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Plots of Spectral Response Function for ABI Bands 1-5 [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>A higher spatial resolution view using VIIRS Near-Infrared &#8220;Snow\/Ice&#8221; (1.61 \u00b5m) images from NOAA-20 (at 1839 UTC) and Suomi NPP (at 1931 UTC) is shown below.
