A comparison of GOES-17 and GOES-15 <em>(GOES-West)<\/em> Water Vapor images <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> highlighted the improved spatial resolution of the GOES-17 data (2 km at satellite sub-point, vs 4 km for GOES-15). The view from GOES-15 was more oblique, since it was positioned at 128\u00ba W longitude (compared to 137.2\u00ba W longitude for GOES-17). GOES-17 is scheduled to become the operational GOES-West satellite in January 2019.<\/p>\n<p>A toggle between GOES-17 Low-level (<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_Band10.pdf\"><strong>7.3 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>), Mid-level (<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_Band09.pdf\"><strong>6.9 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>) and Upper-level (<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_Band08.pdf\"><strong>6.2 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>) Water Vapor images at 1100 UTC is shown below. Although the satellite viewing angle was large, good detail could still be seen.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 648px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/12\/18129_1100utc_goes17_waterVapor_Aleutian_Islands_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/12\/18129_1100utc_goes17_waterVapor_Aleutian_Islands_anim.gif\" alt=\"GOES-17 Low-level (7.3 \u00b5m), Mid-level (6.9 \u00b5m) and Upper-level (6.2 \u00b5m) Water Vapor images at 1100 UTC [click to enlarge]\" width=\"638\" height=\"368\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-17 Low-level <em>(7.3 \u00b5m),<\/em> Mid-level <em>(6.9 \u00b5m)<\/em> and Upper-level <em>(6.2 \u00b5m)<\/em> Water Vapor images at 1100 UTC [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>A sequence of Suomi NPP VIIRS Visible (0.64 \u00b5m), Day\/Night Band (0.7 \u00b5m) and Infrared Window (11.45 \u00b5m) images<em><strong> (below)<\/strong><\/em> showed the storm as it was intensifying &#8212; the peak surface wind gust at Shemya\u00a0Eareckson Air Station (PASY) was <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/12\/181229_1100utc_goes17_waterVapor_pasy_metar.png\"><strong>66 knots at 1024 UTC<\/strong><\/a>.
