Visible <em>(0.64 \u00b5m)<\/em> images, with SPC storm reports plotted in red [click to play animation | <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/12\/181201_goes16_visible_spcStormReports_IL_anim.mp4\"><strong>MP4<\/strong><\/a>]<\/p><\/div>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/ilx\/ILTornadoOutbreaksinDecember\"><strong>largest December tornado outbreak<\/strong><\/a> on record for the state of Illinois occurred on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20181201.html\"><strong>01 December 2018<\/strong><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/lsx\/12_1_2018\"><strong>NWS St. Louis<\/strong><\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/ilx\/01dec18-outbreak\"><strong>NWS Lincoln<\/strong><\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/dvn\/summary_12012018\"><strong>NWS Quad Cities<\/strong><\/a>). 1-minute <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/23225\"><strong>Mesoscale Domain Sector<\/strong><\/a> GOES-16 <em>(GOES-East)<\/em> &#8220;Red&#8221; Visible (<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_Band02.pdf\"><strong>0.64 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>) images <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> showed the development of supercell convection which spawned the severe weather. in addition to the tornadoes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spc.noaa.gov\/climo\/reports\/181201_rpts.html\"><strong>SPC Storm reports<\/strong><\/a> included hail as large as 1.75 inch in diameter and wind gusts of 75 mph.<\/p>\n<p>GOES-16 &#8220;Clean&#8221; Infrared Window (<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_Band13.pdf\"><strong>10.3 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>) images<em><strong> (below)<\/strong><\/em> showed that cloud-top infrared brightness temperatures were as cold as -55\u00baC<em> (darker shades of orange)<\/em> with the more vigorous thunderstorm overshooting tops.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"thumbnail\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/12\/181201_goes16_infrared_spcStormReports_IL_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/12\/G16_IR_IL_SVR_01DEC2018_2018335_230225_GOES-16_0001PANEL.GIF\" alt=\"GOES-16 \" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-16 &#8220;Clean&#8221; Unfortunately, the thunderstorms in Illinois were located along the far eastern edge of the instrument scans in the final 2 images.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 651px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/12\/181201_modis_viirs_visible_infraredWindow_IL_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/12\/181201_modis_viirs_visible_infraredWindow_IL_anim.gif\" alt=\"Terra\/Aqua MODIS and Suomi NPP\/NOAA-20 VIIRS Visible and Infrared images [click to enlarge]\" width=\"641\" height=\"370\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Terra\/Aqua MODIS and Suomi NPP\/NOAA-20 VIIRS Visible and Infrared images [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>Even though the convection in western Illinois was near the limb of NOAA-20 <em>(mis-labelled as Suomi NPP)<\/em> VIIRS swath <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssec.wisc.edu\/datacenter\/NOAA20\/archive\/NA\/2018_12(335-365)\/na2018_12_01_335.gif\"><strong>at 2007 UTC<\/strong><\/a> &#8212; degrading the spatial resolution and introducing some <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/217\">parallax<\/a><\/strong> error &#8212; the coldest detected Infrared brightness temperature (-52C) was still several degrees colder than that detected by GOES-16 <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>.
