A toggle between VIIRS Day\/Night Band (0.7 \u00b5m) images from NOAA-20 and Suomi NPP <em>(<\/em><em><strong>above; <\/strong>courtesy of William Straka, CIMSS)<\/em> revealed the well-defined circulation of the storm a few hours after Midnight local time on 28 September.\u00a0Note the bright streak north of the storm center on the NOAA-20 image &#8212; this was an area of clouds illuminated by intense lightning activity. Other less prominent lightning streaks were evident in thunderstorms farther to the east over the Mediterranean Sea. On the Suomi NPP image, a small bright spot could be seen, evidence of minor volcanic activity at Mount Etna on the island of Sicily, as well as the hazy signature of a plume of blowing dust\/sand that was moving northward off the coast of Libya. The corresponding VIIRS Infrared images are available <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/09\/180928_0018utc_noaa20_0108utc_suomiNPP_viirs_InfraredWindow_Medicane_anim.gif\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>During the following daylight hours of 28 September, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eumetsat.int\/website\/home\/index.html\"><strong>EUMETSAT<\/strong><\/a> Meteosat-11 High Resolution Visible (0.8 \u00b5m) images <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed the storm as it became better organized and increased intensity. shortly after the storm center passed, winds gusted to <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/09\/180928_180929_LGKL_SFCMG.GIF\"><strong>48 knots at Kalamata<\/strong><\/a> at 1220 UTC (while a heavy thunderstorm was being reported).<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 649px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"thumbnail\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/09\/180929_meteosat11_visible_winds_gusts_Medicane_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/09\/960x1280_MSG_B12_MET11_VIS_MEDICANE_29SEP2018_2018272_091500_0001PANEL.GIF\" alt=\"Meteosat-11 Visible (0.8 \u00b5m) images, with hourly plots of winds (yellow) and gusts in knots (red) [click to play animation | MP4]\" width=\"639\" height=\"479\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Meteosat-11 Visible <em>(0.8 \u00b5m)<\/em> images, with hourly plots of wind barbs<em> (yellow)<\/em> and gusts in knots <em>(red)<\/em> [click to play animation | <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/09\/180929_meteosat11_visible_winds_gusts_Medicane_anim.mp4\"><strong>MP4<\/strong><\/a>]<\/p><\/div>A sequence of Terra and Aqua MODIS True Color Red-Green-Blue (RGB) images from 28 and 29 September from <a href=\"https:\/\/re.ssec.wisc.edu\/s\/GVbHz\"><strong>RealEarth<\/strong><\/a> <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed another view of the Zorbas on those 2 days (the valid time of the Terra MODIS image showing the <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/09\/180929_0911utc_terra_modis_truecolor_Medicane_anim.gif\"><strong>eye-like feature on 29 September<\/strong><\/a> was <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/09\/180929_terra_orbit_passes.gif\"><strong>0911 UTC<\/strong><\/a>). <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/09\/180928_sst_Mediterranean_Sea.jpeg\"><strong>Sea Surface Temperatures<\/strong><\/a> were near 25\u00baC in the central Mediterranean Sea where Zorbas was intensifying.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 648px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/09\/180928_180929_terra_aqua_modis_truecolor_Medicane_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/09\/180928_180929_terra_aqua_modis_truecolor_Medicane_anim.gif\" alt=\"Terra\/Aqua MODIS True Color RGB images on 28 and 29 September [click to enlarge]\" width=\"638\" height=\"386\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Terra\/Aqua MODIS True Color RGB images on 28 and 29 September [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>Hourly images of the <a href=\"http:\/\/tropic.ssec.wisc.edu\/real-time\/mtpw2\/product.php?color_type=tpw_nrl_colors&amp;prod=europe&amp;timespan=48hrs&amp;anim=html5\"><strong>MIMIC Total Precipitable Water<\/strong><\/a> product <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed moisture associated with the storm, which produced heavy rainfall and flash flooding in parts of southern Greece &#8212; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ospo.noaa.gov\/Products\/bTPW\/TPW_Animation.html?fromDate=20180927&amp;fromHour=2&amp;endDate=20180929&amp;endHour=18&amp;product=EUROPE_PCT&amp;interval=hourly\"><strong>NESDIS Blended TPW Anomaly<\/strong><\/a> product indicated that this moisture was as much as 200% of normal for the region and date.
