These images covered the far northern portion of the GOES-16 Full Disk view in AWIPS, and depicted <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/08\/180801_surface_analyses_Canada_anim.gif\"><strong>frontal wave<\/strong><\/a> disturbances within the <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/08\/180801_300hpa_jetstream_anim.gif\"><strong>polar jet stream<\/strong><\/a> over that region.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the large satellite viewing angle or &#8220;zenith angle&#8221;, the 2 km water vapor image pixel dimension <em>(at satellite sub-point)<\/em> increased to around 6.4 km or 4 miles<strong><em> (below)<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 651px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/08\/dist_fdwv9-20180801_230041.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/08\/dist_fdwv9-20180801_230041.png\" alt=\"Magnified view of GOES-16 Mid-level (6.9 \u00b5m) Water Vapor image, showing the pixel dimension over Nunavut, Canada [click to enlarge]\" width=\"641\" height=\"370\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Magnified view of a GOES-16 Mid-level<em> (6.9 \u00b5m)<\/em> Water Vapor image, showing the pixel dimension over Nunavut, Canada [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>Another effect of the large satellite view angle was a shift of the Water Vapor <a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/wf\/\"><strong>weighting functions<\/strong><\/a> to higher altitudes &#8212; plots of the 7.3 \u00b5m, 6.9 \u00b5m and 6.2 \u00b5m weighting functions calculated using 12 UTC rawinsonde data from <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/08\/Baker_Lake_map_fdwv9-20180801_070041.png\"><strong>Baker Lake, Nunavut<\/strong><\/a> are shown below.
