Visible Imagery (GOES-16 ABI Band 2, &#8220;Red Visible&#8221;, at 0.64 \u00b5m), above, from late afternoon on 11 July shows a well-developed storm with a pronounced eye.<\/p>\n<p>Before Sunrise on 11 July 2018, both NOAA-20 and <a href=\"http:\/\/global.jaxa.jp\/projects\/sat\/gcom_w\/\">JAXA&#8217;s <span style=\"font-size: small;\">Global Change Observation Mission<\/span> (GCOM) Satellite<\/a> overflew the storm at slightly different times.\u00a0 The VIIRS (<a href=\"https:\/\/jointmission.gsfc.nasa.gov\/viirs.html\">Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite<\/a>) instrument NOAA-20 samples in the visible and infrared part of the electromagnetic spectrum whereas the AMSR2 Instrument (<a href=\"http:\/\/suzaku.eorc.jaxa.jp\/GCOM_W\/w_amsr2\/whats_amsr2.html\"><span class=\"st\">Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2<\/span><\/a>) on GCOM samples in the microwave.\u00a0 Because microwave energy can penetrate clouds, it can be used to estimate rainfall, and the toggle below steps through the <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/07\/I05_N20_071118_0645_HurrChris_nolabels.png\">Infrared (11.45 \u00b5m)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/07\/DNB_N20_071118_0645_1E-9_HurrChris_nolabels.png\">Day Night Band Visible (0.70 \u00b5m)<\/a> from VIIRS (at 0645 UTC) as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/07\/AMSR2_071118_0618_convePrecip_HurrChris_labels.png\">Convective Precipitation<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/07\/VIIRS_0645_AMSR2_071118_0618_SurfaceRainRate_HurrChris_labels_toggle.gif\">Surface Rain rate<\/a> from AMSR2 (at 0618 UTC).\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>Lunar illumination is absent\u00a0 in the Day Night band visible imagery, but Earth glow nevertheless illuminates the eye of the storm;\u00a0 in addition, two lightning streaks are visible north and east of the center.\u00a0 Surface Rain and Convective Rain rates show the heaviest rains near the storm center, as expected (NOAA-20 VIIRS and GCOM AMSR2 imagery courtesy William Straka, CIMSS).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28889\" style=\"width: 635px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/07\/VIIRS_0645_AMSR2_071118_0618_SurfaceRainRate_HurrChris_labels_toggle.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28889\" class=\"wp-image-28889\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/07\/VIIRS_0645_AMSR2_071118_0618_SurfaceRainRate_HurrChris_labels_toggle.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"432\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-28889\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">VIIRS Infrared (11.45 \u00b5m) and Visible (0.70 \u00b5m) Day Night Band Visible Imagery, 0645 UTC on 11 July 2018, and GCOM AMSR2 Convective Precipitation and Surface Rain Rate estimates at 0618 UTC on 11 July (Click to enlarge)<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hurricane Chris is accelerating away from the United States (although it will likely pass very close to Cape Race, Newfoundland Canada).
