Rapid-scan Himawari-8 &#8220;Red&#8221; Visible (0.64 \u00b5m) and &#8220;Clean&#8221; Infrared Window (10.4 \u00b5m) images <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> showed Maria during this period of rapid intensification. Cloud-top infrared brightness temperatures reached -80\u00baC <em>(violet enhancement)<\/em> at times in the eyewall of the storm.<\/p>\n<p>A GPM GMI Microwave (85 GHz) image from the <a href=\"http:\/\/tropic.ssec.wisc.edu\"><strong>CIMSS Tropical Cyclones<\/strong><\/a> site <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed the pinhole eye of Maria around the time it reached Category 5 intensity. The tropical cyclone was moving over water with high values of <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/07\/180705_ohc_STY_Maria.jpeg\"><strong>Ocean Heat Content<\/strong><\/a> &#8212; and was in an environment characterized by low values of <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/07\/180706_00utc_shear_STY_Maria.jpeg\"><strong>Deep-layer Wind Shear<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/07\/180705_2346utc_gpm_gmi_microwave_STY_Maria.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/07\/180705_2346utc_gpm_gmi_microwave_STY_Maria.jpeg\" alt=\"GPM GMI Microwave (85 GHz) image [click to enlarge]\" width=\"640\" height=\"467\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GPM GMI Microwave (85 GHz) image [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>Mesovortices could be seen within the eye on Himawari-8 Visible imagery <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>.
