{"id":28712,"date":"2018-06-30T23:59:10","date_gmt":"2018-06-30T23:59:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?p=28712"},"modified":"2018-07-02T02:25:36","modified_gmt":"2018-07-02T02:25:36","slug":"fog-stratus-over-lake-michigan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/28712","title":{"rendered":"Fog\/stratus over Lake Michigan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"thumbnail\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/06\/180630_goes16_visible_Lake_Michigan_fog_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/06\/G16_VIS_LAKE_MICHIGAN_30JUN2018_960x1280_B2_2018181_173220_0001PANEL_00039.GIF\" alt=\"GOES-16 \" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-16 &#8220;Red&#8221; Visible <em>(0.64 \u00b5m)<\/em> images, with hourly plots of surface reports [click to play animation | <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/06\/180630_goes16_visible_Lake_Michigan_fog_anim.mp4\"><strong>MP4<\/strong><\/a>]<\/p><\/div>As a warm and very humid air mass (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/06\/180630_surface_analyses_Great_Lakes_anim.gif\"><strong>surface analyses<\/strong><\/a>) moved northward across the relatively cool waters of Lake Michigan on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20180630.html\"><strong>30 June 2018<\/strong><\/a>, GOES-16 <em>(GOES-East)<\/em> &#8220;Red&#8221; Visible (<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_Band02.pdf\"><strong>0.64 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>) images <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> revealed complex interactions of the resulting fog\/stratus with coastlines and islands &#8212; features such as &#8220;bow shock waves&#8221; and internal reflections of waves off the northern end of the lake could be seen.<\/p>\n<p>A 30-meter resolution Landsat-8 false-color Red-Green-Blue (RGB) image viewed using <a href=\"https:\/\/re.ssec.wisc.edu\/s\/NPYB6\"><strong>RealEarth<\/strong><\/a> <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> provided a very detailed view of the fog\/stratus structure over the northern end of the lake.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/06\/180630_1634utc_landsat8_falsecolor_Lake_Michigan.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/06\/180630_1634utc_landsat8_falsecolor_Lake_Michigan.jpeg\" alt=\"Landsat-8 false-color RGB image [click to enlarge]\" width=\"640\" height=\"395\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Landsat-8 false-color RGB image [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>The Aqua MODIS Sea Surface Temperature product at 1734 UTC <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed SST values in the middle 60s to around 70\u00baF across the southern end of Lake Michigan (the southern lake buoy reported a water temperature of 66\u00baF), transitioning to SST values around 60\u00baF mid-lake.
