Using Himawari-8 data, multispectral retrievals of parameters such as Ash Cloud Height<em><strong> (above)<\/strong><\/em> and Ash Loading <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> from the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/volcano.ssec.wisc.edu\/\">NOAA\/CIMSS Volcanic Cloud Monitoring<\/a> <\/strong>site helped to characterize the volcanic ash plume.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 649px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"thumbnail\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/05\/180519_himawari8_kilauea_ash_loading_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/05\/kil_al_haimage02.png\" alt=\"Himawari-8 Ash Loading product [click to play animation]\" width=\"639\" height=\"524\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Himawari-8 Ash Loading product [click to play animation]<\/p><\/div>Later in the day, a Suomi NPP VIIRS True-color Red-Green-Blue (RGB) image viewed using <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/realearth.ssec.wisc.edu\/\">RealEarth<\/a><\/strong> <em><strong> (below)<\/strong> <\/em>showed the hazy signature of volcanic smog or &#8220;vog&#8221; which had spread out to the south, southwest and west of the Big Island.
