These contrails were best seen using the Band 26 (1.3\u00c2\u00b5m) near-IR channel <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> and the Band 27 (6.7\u00c2\u00b5m) water vapor channel <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>. Rawinsonde data from <a title=\"KFFC rawinsonde\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2006\/11\/061129_12_kffc_raob.jpg\"><strong>Peachtree City GA (KFFC)<\/strong><\/a> and <a title=\"KGSO rawinsonde\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2006\/11\/061129_12_kgso_raob.jpg\"><strong>Greensboro NC (KGSO)<\/strong><\/a> indicated increasing moisture aloft within the range of altitudes common for commercial jets (around 35,000 feet) &#8212; the contrails were relatively long-lived within this relatively moist environment <a target=\"_blank\" title=\"GOES-12 water vapor channel animation\" href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/misc\/blog\/061129_g12_wv.fli\"><strong>(GOES-12 water vapor channel animation)<\/strong><\/a>.<br \/>\n<a title=\"MODIS 6.7\u00c2\u00b5m water vapor image\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2006\/11\/061129_modis_ch27_contrail.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" align=\"middle\" alt=\"MODIS 6.7\u00c2\u00b5m water vapor image\" id=\"image275\" title=\"MODIS 6.7\u00c2\u00b5m water vapor image\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2006\/11\/061129_modis_ch27_contrail.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AWIPS MODIS imagery revealed widespread condensation trails (or &#8220;contrails&#8221;) from commercial aircraft flying across the southeastern US on 29 November 2006.
