GOES-15<em> (GOES-West)<\/em> Water Vapor (6.5 \u00b5m) and Infrared Window (10.7 \u00b5m) images<em><strong> (above)<\/strong><\/em> showed these deep convective storms, which exhibited cloud-top infrared brightness temperatures in the -60 to -70 \u00baC range<em> (red to black enhancement)<\/em>. <strong>December 2018<\/strong> <strong>Update:<\/strong> a new US record for 24-hour precipitation (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/04\/180425_phfo_rer.text\"><strong>49.69 inches<\/strong><\/a>) was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncdc.noaa.gov\/monitoring-content\/extremes\/ncec\/precip-24hr-kauai-2018.pdf\"><strong>confirmed<\/strong><\/a> by the National Climate Extremes Committee.<\/p>\n<p>Even though the JMA Himawari-8 AHI instrument provides more frequent Water Vapor and Infrared Window images<em> (every 10 minutes, compared to every 15-30 minutes with GOES-15)<\/em> at a higher spatial resolution<em> (2-km at satellite sub-point, vs 4-km with GOES-15),\u00a0<\/em> Hawai&#8217;i is located <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/04\/180415_15UTC_HIMAWARI8_INFRARED_KAUAI_LIMB.GIF\"><strong>near the limb<\/strong><\/a> of the Himawari-8 view &#8212; so <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/217\"><strong>parallax<\/strong><\/a> was playing a major role in the apparent location of the important convective features.
