The MODIS Sea Surface Temperature (SST) product from 2 days earlier <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> indicated that SST values in the much of the middle of the lake were still in the low 40s F <em>(blue color enhancement)<\/em> &#8212; and Buoy 45006 was actually reporting a SST value of <strong>39 F<\/strong> on 22 June. In northern Wisconsin, note the large surface air temperature gradient that existed between Port Wing <em>(station identifier PNGW3)<\/em> which remained in the upper 40s F and Ashland <em>(station identifier KASX)<\/em> which rose into the low 80s F!<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/06\/MODIS_SST_20090620_1838.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MODIS Sea Surface Temperature product\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/06\/MODIS_SST_20090620_1838.png\" title=\"MODIS Sea Surface Temperature product\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS Sea Surface Temperature product<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Farther to the south, GOES-12 visible imagery also showed that a Lake Michigan lake breeze was moving inland across southeastern Wisconsin and northeastern Illinois <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/06\/lake_breeze_2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"GOES-12 visible image\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/06\/lake_breeze_2.jpg\" title=\"GOES-12 visible image\" width=\"480\" height=\"380\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-12 visible image<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GOES-12 visible images (above) showed that a well-defined lake breeze developed along the western portion of Lake Superior during the afternoon hours on 22 June 2009.
