AWIPS comparisons of the 1-km resolution MODIS 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor image with the corresponding 4-km resolution GOES-12 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor image <strong><em>(above)<\/em><\/strong> and the 8-km resolution GOES-11 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor image <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> demonstrated the value of better spatial resolution for detecting such mesoscale features. <\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/06\/090622_modis_g11_wv_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"MODIS 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m and GOES-11 8-km 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/06\/090622_modis_g11_wv_anim.gif\" title=\"MODIS 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m and GOES-11 8-km 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor images\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m and GOES-11 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The appearance of these banded &#8220;mountain wave signatures&#8221; on water vapor imagery indicates the potential for clear air turbulence in those areas; however, there were no pilot reports of turbulence until 13:02 UTC near Fort Collins <em>(at an altitude of 15,000 feet)<\/em>. An animation of the GOES-12 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor imagery <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> also showed the presence of a lee-side <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/06\/Sfc_Fronts_20090622_1459.png\">cold frontal<\/a><\/strong> gravity wave, which could be seen propagating southward across eastern Colorado and western Kansas. In fact, a small packet of waves could be seen along and behind the leading edge of this lee-side cold frontal gravity wave on the MODIS water vapor images above &#8212; <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/06\/METAR_Plot_20090622_0900.png\">surface winds behind this front<\/a><\/strong> had gusted to 36 knots at McCook, Nebraska <em>(station identifier KMCK)<\/em> and 20 knots at Goodland, Kansas <em>(station identifier KGLD)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/06\/090622_g12_wv_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"GOES-12 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/06\/090622_g12_wv_anim.gif\" title=\"GOES-12 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor images\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-12 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor images<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Moderate southwesterly flow aloft over the Rocky Mountains was aiding in the formation of mountain waves across much of Colorado and parts of the adjacent states on 22 June 2009.
