Of particular interest was the appearance of an arc of significantly warmer\/drier air <em>(signified by the darker blue colors)<\/em> along the upwind <em>(western)<\/em> edge of the thunderstorm cloud as the convection continued to intensify. This water vapor image signature likely indicates areas of well-defined compensating subsidence along with the possible &#8220;detrainment&#8221; of dry stratospheric air around the cloud edge. Note that the upstream cirrus cloud features also appeared to erode and disappear as they arrived at this region of subsidence along the western cloud edge.<\/p>\n<p>There was one pilot report of moderate turbulence at an altitude of 38,000 feet around 16:00 UTC <em><strong>(below),<\/strong><\/em> which was near the water vapor signature of compensating subsidence.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/06\/Pirep_Turb_260-500_20090609_1600.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"GOES-12 water vapor image + pilot reports of turbulence\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/06\/Pirep_Turb_260-500_20090609_1600.png\" alt=\"GOES-12 water vapor image + pilot reports of turbulence\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-12 water vapor image + pilot reports of turbulence<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A comparison of the 1-km resolution MODIS 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor channel and the 4-km resolution GOES-12\u00c2\u00a0 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor channel data <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> shows that MODIS water vapor brightness temperature values were as warm as <strong>-26.5\u00c2\u00ba C<\/strong> <em>(yellow color enhancement)<\/em> just to the west of the thunderstorm edge &#8212; the warmest GOES-12 water vapor brightness temperature value was -29\u00c2\u00ba C.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/06\/090609_modis_goes_wv_anim.gif\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"MODIS 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor + GOES-12 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/06\/090609_modis_goes_wv_anim.gif\" alt=\"MODIS 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor + GOES-12 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor images\" width=\"480\" height=\"458\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor + GOES-12 6.5 \u00c2\u00b5m water vapor images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A similar comparison of MODIS and GOES-12 water vapor images about 10 hours later <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> displayed a very pronounced signature of a gravity wave train along the western edge of the ongoing thunderstorm complex.
