Note that the smoke features became brighter toward sunset &#8212; this was due to a more favorable <em>forward scattering<\/em> geometry between the sun, the smoke and the satellite sensors.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"thumbnail\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/12\/171214_goes16_visible_CA_wildfire_smoke_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/12\/G16_VIS_CA_FIRE_SMOKE_14DEC2017_960x1280_B2_2017348_234541_0001PANEL_00030.GIF\" alt=\"GOES-16 Visible (0.64 \u00b5m) images [click to play animation]\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-16 Visible (0.64 \u00b5m) images [click to play animation]<\/p><\/div>Since the atmospheric column over that region of the Pacific was quite dry (as seen in the Water Vapor imagery), the Near-Infrared &#8220;Cirrus&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_Band04.pdf\"><strong>1.37 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>) images<em><strong> (below)<\/strong><\/em> were able to display a subtle signature of the smoke features &#8212; recall that the strength of the 1.37 \u00b5m spectral band is detection of particles that are <em>efficient scatterers of light<\/em> (such as cirrus ice crystals, volcanic ash, dust and smoke).<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"thumbnail\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/12\/171214_goes16_cirrus_CA_wildfire_smoke_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/12\/G16_CIRRUS_CA_FIRE_SMOKE_14DEC2017_960x1280_B4_2017348_183041_0001PANEL_00009.GIF\" alt=\"GOES-16 Near-Infrared \" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-16 Near-Infrared &#8220;Cirrus&#8221;
