A Suomi NPP VIIRS Day\/Night Band (0.7 \u00b5m) image about 22 minutes prior to launch <em><strong>(above; <\/strong>courtesy of William Straka, CIMSS<strong>)<\/strong><\/em> showed light emitted by the launch facility as well as nearby cites and offshore buoys.<\/p>\n<p>A comparison of 3 consecutive images of GOES-16 Near-Infrared &#8220;Snow\/Ice&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_Band05.pdf\"><strong>1.61 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>), Near-Infrared &#8220;Cloud Particle Size&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_Band06.pdf\"><strong>2.24 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>) and Shortwave Infrared (<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_Band07.pdf\"><strong>3.9 mm<\/strong><\/a>) data<em><strong> (below)<\/strong><\/em> revealed the thermal signature of the launch rocket booster engines at <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/11\/960x427_AGOES16_B567_G16_NIR_NIR_SWIR_JPSS_LAUNCH_18NOV2017_2017322_094720_0003PANELS.GIF\"><strong>0947 UTC<\/strong><\/a> (just west of the California coast). The hot thermal signature is brighter white on the Near-Infrared images, and darker gray on the Shortwave Infrared image.
