A GOES-16 <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/23225\"><strong>Mesoscale Sector<\/strong><\/a> provided imagery at 1-minute intervals during this event &#8212; &#8220;Red&#8221; Visible (<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_Band02.pdf\"><strong>0.64 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>) and &#8220;Clean&#8221; Infrared Window (<a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_Band13.pdf\"><strong>10.3 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>) images <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> with plots of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.spc.noaa.gov\/climo\/reports\/171105_rpts.html\">SPC storm reports<\/a><\/strong> (T=tornado; W=damaging winds; H=hail) showed the development and motion of the severe thunderstorms. The locations of the plotted SPC storm reports have been <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/217\"><strong>parallax<\/strong><\/a>-corrected upward from the surface, to match a mean storm-top height of 10 km.<\/p>\n<p>A toggle between Suomi NPP VIIRS Visible (0.64 \u00b5m) and Infrared Window (11.45 \u00b5m) images <em><strong>(below)<\/strong> <\/em>showed a snapshot of the storm at 1803 UTC. SPC storm reports within about\u00a0 +\/- 30 minutes of the image time are also plotted. The coldest storm-top infrared brightness temperatures were -71\u00baC <em>(black enhancement),<\/em> over southern and eastern Indiana. The VIIRS instrument will also fly on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nesdis.noaa.gov\/jpss-1\"><strong>JPSS<\/strong><\/a> series of satellites.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 649px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/11\/171105_1803utc_suomi_npp_viirs_Visible_InfraredWindow_IN_OH_spc_storm_reports_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/11\/171105_1803utc_suomi_npp_viirs_Visible_InfraredWindow_IN_OH_spc_storm_reports_anim.gif\" alt=\"Suomi NPP VIIRS Visible (0.64 \u00b5m) and Infrared Window (11.45 \u00b5m) images, with plots of SPC storm reports [click to enlarge]\" width=\"639\" height=\"383\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Suomi NPP VIIRS Visible (0.64 \u00b5m) and Infrared Window (11.45 \u00b5m) images, with plots of SPC storm reports [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>One interesting aspect seen on 1806 UTC Aqua MODIS Water Vapor (6.7 \u00b5m) imagery <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> was the signature of strong subsidence<em> (darker blue enhancement)<\/em> immediately <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spc.noaa.gov\/cgi-bin-spc\/getuadata.pl?MyDate1=171105&amp;Time1=12&amp;MyDate2=&amp;Time2=12&amp;align=V&amp;Levels=250\"><strong>upwind<\/strong><\/a> &#8212; along the western edge &#8212; of the 2 larger areas of severe convection.
