Also of interest is the appearance of\u00c2\u00a0 both transverse banding <em>and<\/em> an orthogonal gravity wave structure in the northwestern portion of the anvil edge <em>(near the Mexico border)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>A comparison of the MODIS 0.6 \u00c2\u00b5m &#8220;visible channel&#8221;, 1.3 \u00c2\u00b5m &#8220;cirrus detection channel&#8221;, 6.7 \u00c2\u00b5m &#8220;water vapor channel&#8221;, and the 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m &#8220;IR window channel&#8221; <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed that the various satellite\u00c2\u00a0 channels differed in their\u00c2\u00a0 ability to detect the true western and northwestern extent of the cirrus anvil edge.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/05\/090528_modis_gom_anim.gif\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"MODIS  visible, cirrus detection,  water vapor, and IR window channel images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/05\/090528_modis_gom_anim.gif\" alt=\"MODIS IR, visible, cirrus, and water vapor channel images\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS  visible, cirrus detection, water vapor, and IR window channel images<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AWIPS images of the 1-km resolution MODIS 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m\u00c2\u00a0 and the 4-km resolution GOES-12 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m &#8220;IR window&#8221; channels (above) showed a cluster of very cold cloud top temperatures (-88\u00c2\u00ba C on MODIS, and -82\u00c2\u00ba C on GOES, violet colors) associated with deep convection over the northwestern Gulf of Mexico on 28 May 2009.
