{"id":25889,"date":"2017-10-28T18:59:05","date_gmt":"2017-10-28T18:59:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?p=25889"},"modified":"2017-10-30T19:19:01","modified_gmt":"2017-10-30T19:19:01","slug":"dissipation-of-nocturnal-valley-fog-across-new-england","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/25889","title":{"rendered":"Dissipation of nocturnal valley fog across New England"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"thumbnail\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/10\/171028_goes16_visible_New_England_fog_anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/10\/960x1280_AGOES16_B2_G16_VIS_NEUS_FOG_28OCT2017_2017301_130221_0001PANEL.GIF\" alt=\"GOES-16 Visible (0.64 \u00b5m) images, with hourly surface reports of fog plotted in yellow [click to play animation]\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-16 Visible (0.64 \u00b5m) images, with hourly surface reports of fog plotted in yellow [click to play animation]<\/p><\/div><em>* GOES-16 data posted on this page are preliminary, non-operational and are undergoing testing *<\/em><\/p>\n<p>With high pressure dominating across the region during the pre-dawn nighttime hours (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/10\/171028_surface_analyses_anim.gif\"><strong>surface analyses<\/strong><\/a>), strong radiational cooling (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/10\/171028_kgyx_rtp.text\"><strong>minimum temperatures<\/strong><\/a>) aided in the formation of widespread valley fog across New England on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20171028.html\"><strong>28 October 2017<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 Post-sunrise GOES-16 &#8220;Red&#8221; Visible (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/dailywxmap\/index_20171028.html\"><strong>0.64 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>) images revealed the areal extent of the valley fog; however, fog dissipation was fairly rapid during the morning hours as surface heating from abundant sunlight promoted sufficient boundary layer mixing.<\/p>\n<p>During the preceding nighttime hours, development of widespread valley fog could be seen on Suomi NPP VIIRS Infrared Brightness Temperature Difference (11.45 \u00b5m &#8211; 3.74 \u00b5m) images<em><strong> (below) <\/strong><\/em>&#8212; although surface fog features were obscured at times by patchy cirrus clouds aloft <em>(black enhancement)<\/em>.
