The tornado formed near 18.439089, -66.041962 on October 6th around 4:25pm AST. 10+ roofs were damaged from the event. Many of those roofs had already been repaired by residents or by the carpenters that were volunteering in the community. click <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NWSSanJuan\/status\/912088552145645568\/photo\/1?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&amp;ref_url=http%3A%2F%2Fcimss.ssec.wisc.edu%2Fgoes%2Fblog%2Farchives%2Fdate%2F2017%2F10%2F06\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a> for a Tweet from NWS San Juan showing their radar damage) &#8212; &#8220;Red&#8221; Visible (<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_Band02.pdf\">0.64 \u00b5m<\/a><\/strong>) and &#8220;Clean&#8221; Infrared Window (<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_Band13.pdf\">10.3 \u00b5m<\/a><\/strong>) images <strong><em>(above) <\/em><\/strong>showed the region around San Juan (station identifier TJSJ).\u00a0 An Infrared animation covering the time from 1915 UTC to 2054 UTC, displayed at the GOES-16 ABI full 12-bit depth (created using <a href=\"http:\/\/sift.ssec.wisc.edu\"><strong>SIFT<\/strong><\/a>) is shown <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/10\/GOES16_B13_1915_2055_06Oct2017anim.gif\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a>; a visible animation is available <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/10\/GOES16_B02_1915_2055_06Oct2017anim.gif\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Convective initiation occurred over the far eastern end of the island about an hour before the tornado &#8212;\u00a0cloud-top infrared brightness temperatures cooled to around -70\u00baC <em>(black enhancement)<\/em> around the time of the tornado (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/10\/958x638_AGOES16_B213_G16_VIS_IR_MESO_TJSJ_PR_06OCT2017_2017279_202558_0002PANELS.GIF\">2025 UTC<\/a><\/strong>) during a second burst of convection.<\/p>\n<p>Of particular note is the speed with which the second convective storm grew.\u00a0 Between 2020 UTC and 2025 UTC, the cloud-top infrared brightness temperatures cooled 20\u00baC in the region of thunderstorm development!\u00a0 The bar graphs below show the brightness temperature distribution in the region of convective development.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25751\" style=\"width: 635px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/10\/B13_BT_2020_2025_06Oct2017toggle.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25751\" class=\"wp-image-25751\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/10\/B13_BT_2020_2025_06Oct2017toggle.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"565\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-25751\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cloud-Top Brightness Temperatures over a Tornadic Convective Storm at 2020 and 2025 UTC on 6 October 2017 (Click to enlarge)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The animation below shows GOES-16 10.3 \u00b5m Clean Infrared Window images for 10 minutes: 2017-2026 UTC on 6 October.
