A strong easterly to northeasterly <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diablo_wind\">Diablo wind<\/a><\/strong> (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/10\/171009_kmtr_pns.text\">gusts<\/a><\/strong>) along with dry fuels led to extreme fire behavior, with many of the fires quickly exhibiting very hot infrared brightness temperature values and growing in size at an explosive rate (reportedly burning <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/wildfiretoday.com\/2017\/10\/09\/80000-acres-in-18-hours-damage-from-historic-california-wine-country-wildfires-comes-into-focus\/\">80,000 acres in 18 hours<\/a><\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>A comparison of nighttime GOES-16 Shortwave Infrared (3.9 \u00b5m) and Near-Infrared &#8220;Snow\/Ice&#8221; (<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/goes\/OCLOFactSheetPDFs\/ABIQuickGuide_Band05.pdf\">1.61 \u00b5m<\/a><\/strong>) images <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> offered another example of nocturnal fire signature identification &#8212; the bright glow of the fires showed up well on the 1-km resolution 1.61 \u00b5m imagery. Especially noteworthy was the very rapid southwestward run of the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fire.ca.gov\/current_incidents\/incidentdetails\/Index\/1867\">Tubbs Fire<\/a><\/strong>, which eventually moved just south of station identifier <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/10\/171009_KSTS_SFCMG.GIF\">KSTS<\/a><\/strong> (Santa Rosa Sonoma County Airport; the city of Santa Rosa is located about 5 miles southeast of the airport). These Northern California fires have resulted in numerous fatalities, destroyed at least 3500 homes and businesses, and forced large-scale evacuations (<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/lanow\/la-me-northern-california-firestorms-20171012-story.html\">media story<\/a><\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"thumbnail\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/10\/171009_goes16_ShortwaveInfrared_NearInfraredSnowIce_CA_fires_anim.mp4\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/10\/G16_SWIR_SNOW_ICE_CA_FIRES_09OCT2017_958x638_B75_2017282_082722_0002PANELS_00066.GIF\" alt=\"GOES-16 Shortwave Infrared (3.9 \u00b5m, left) and Near-Infrared \" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-16 Shortwave Infrared (3.9 \u00b5m, left) and Near-Infrared &#8220;Snow\/Ice&#8221; (1.61 \u00b5m, right) images [click to play MP4 animation]<\/p><\/div>A toggle between 1007 UTC (3:07 AM local time) Suomi NPP VIIRS Shortwave Infrared (3.74 \u00b5m) and Day\/Night Band (0.7 \u00b5m) images <strong><em>(below)<\/em><\/strong> provided a view of the fires at an even higher spatial resolution. Since the Moon was in the Waning Gibbous phase (at 82% of Full), it provided ample illumination to highlight the dense smoke plumes drifting west-southwestward over the adjacent offshore waters of the Pacific Ocean.<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a could be seen moving northeastward on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/re.ssec.wisc.edu\/s\/sCAag\">RealEarth<\/a><\/strong> VIIRS true-color imagery, while the burn scars of a number of the larger fires October<\/a><\/strong> helped to transport the wildfire smoke far southward over the Pacific Ocean <strong><em>(above)<\/em><\/strong>.
