AWIPS images of the GOES-12 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR window channel <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> showed that there was a general lack of cloudiness in the vicinity of the frontal boundary, which allowed the thermal contrast on either side of the front to be seen <em>(with the warmer air and darker gray land surfaces located south of the front)<\/em>. However, the IR imagery also seemed to indicate that the far eastern portion of the front was beginning to\u00c2\u00a0 sag southward, as seen by the of\u00c2\u00a0 surge colder IR brightness temperatures <em>(lighter gray shades)<\/em> along the northeastern Wisconsin shoreline of Lake Michigan.<\/p>\n<p>A closer view of the northern portion of Lake Michigan using GOES-12 visible channel images <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> showed that there was a patch of lake stratus propagating quickly southwestward along the western shoreline of the lake, presumably along and just behind the leading edge of the advancing frontal boundary. Air temperatures at buoy 45002 dropped to 39\u00c2\u00ba F as northeasterly winds increased behind the front.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/05\/090519_g12_vis_anim.gif\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"GOES-12 visible images\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/05\/090519_g12_vis_anim.gif\" alt=\"GOES-12 visible images\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-12 visible images<\/p><\/div>\n<p>AWIPS images of the MODIS 250-meter resolution &#8220;true color&#8221; image and the corresponding 1-km resolution MODIS 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR window image <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> revealed both the leading edge of the colder air <em>(the transition from warmer red and yellow colors to the colder green colors)<\/em> inland across the northeastern counties of Wisconsin, as well as a wave\/undular bore signature on the waters of Lake Michigan.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/05\/090519_modis_ir_truecolor.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"MODIS true color image + MODIS 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR image\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/05\/090519_modis_ir_truecolor.jpg\" alt=\"MODIS true color image + MODIS 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR image\" width=\"480\" height=\"305\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS true color image + MODIS 11.0 \u00c2\u00b5m IR image<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Consecutive image of the MODIS Land Surface Temperature (LST) product <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em> also showed the southward progression of the colder air.
