{"id":25366,"date":"2017-09-20T22:22:36","date_gmt":"2017-09-20T22:22:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/?p=25366"},"modified":"2017-09-21T12:15:42","modified_gmt":"2017-09-21T12:15:42","slug":"convective-development-over-the-upper-midwest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/archives\/25366","title":{"rendered":"Convective Development over the Upper Midwest"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_25367\" style=\"width: 635px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/09\/GOESBaselineCAPE-20170920_1702_2137anim.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25367\" class=\"wp-image-25367\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/09\/GOESBaselineCAPE-20170920_1702_2137anim.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"396\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-25367\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-16 Derived Convective Available Potential Energy (CAPE), 1702-2137 UTC on 20 September 2017 (Click to enlarge)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>GOES-16 data posted on this page are preliminary, non-operational and are undergoing testing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>GOES-16 Data are used to create many Baseline Products that can be used to monitor and anticipate weather.\u00a0 The animation above shows the GOES-16 Convective Available Potential Energy (CAPE).\u00a0 Values increased by about 50-75% in a corridor from southern Wisconsin southwestward to Missouri over the course of four hours as shown in the loop.\u00a0 CAPE varies over Illinois, with a minimum extending from Chicago southwestward, with larger values to the east and to the west.\u00a0 The CAPE developed in a region where the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spc.noaa.gov\">Storm Prediction Center<\/a> had a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spc.noaa.gov\/products\/outlook\/archive\/2017\/day1otlk_20170920_2000.html\">slight risk of severe weather.<\/a>  A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spc.noaa.gov\/products\/md\/md1662.html\">Mesoscale Discussion for the region<\/a> was also issued.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spc.noaa.gov\/climo\/reports\/170920_rpts.html\">Hail up to two inches in diameter was reported in central Wisconsin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Baseline Stability Products are <i>Clear-Sky<\/i> only products. (They are also available online <a href=\"http:\/\/soundingval.ssec.wisc.edu\/imagery\">here<\/a>, albeit delayed.)
