GOES-12 10.7 \u00c2\u00b5m IR window images <em><strong>(above)<\/strong><\/em> showed the large areal coverage of cold cloud tops <em>(which were as cold as -79\u00c2\u00ba C in southeastern Kansas)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The impressive derecho left a long swath of storm reports <em><strong>(below),<\/strong><\/em> which included several tornadoes and wind gusts to 87 knots <em>(100 mph)<\/em> at 11:30 UTC in Kansas, 81 knots <em>(93 mph)<\/em> at 12:15 UTC in Missouri, and 92 knots <em>(106 mph)<\/em> at 18:25 UTC in Illinois. Hail as large as 2.75 inch in diameter was reported in Missouri at 14:34 UTC.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/05\/MODIS_IR_20090508_1857.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"MODIS 11.0 IR window image + storm reports\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/05\/MODIS_IR_20090508_1857.png\" alt=\"MODIS 11.0 IR window image + storm reports\" width=\"480\" height=\"459\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MODIS 11.0 IR window image + storm reports<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As the storm matured toward mid-day, it began to display transverse banding on both the northern periphery and the\u00c2\u00a0 southern periphery of the cloud shield <em><strong>(below)<\/strong><\/em>.
