Harvey is forecast to make landfall on the Texas Gulf Coast (See the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/\">National Hurricane Center website<\/a> for further details), and conditions favor strengthening. One of the favorable conditions is shown in the animation of Total Precipitable Water, below, from <a href=\"http:\/\/tropic.ssec.wisc.edu\/real-time\/mtpw2\/product.php?color_type=tpw_nrl_colors&amp;prod=conus&amp;timespan=72hrs&amp;anim=html5\">this site<\/a>. There is abundant moisture surrounding the storm, extending into eastern and southeastern Texas. Flooding rains will likely precede and accompany this storm.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to abundant moisture, Harvey&#8217;s projected path takes it over very deep very warm water (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/08\/OHC_Harvey_1200_24August2017.png\">Link<\/a> showing Oceanic Heat Content).<\/p>\n<p>Note: <strong>Harvey achieved <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhc.noaa.gov\/archive\/2017\/al09\/al092017.discus.017.shtml?\">Hurricane Status<\/a> at 1 PM CDT on 24 August 2017<\/strong>. Harvey continued to rapidly intensify during the day (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/08\/170824_adt_Hurricane_Harvey.gif\">ADT<\/a> |<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/08\/170824_satcon_winds_Hurricane_Harvey.gif\"> SATCON<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/08\/mimictpw_conus_24h_ending12z_24August2017.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/08\/mimictpw_conus_24h_ending12z_24August2017.gif\" alt=\"GOES-16 \" width=\"640\" height=\"320\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MIMIC Total Precipitable Water, 24-hour animation ending at 1200 UTC 24 August 2017 [click to enlarge]<\/p><\/div>Harvey is a large storm. The GOES-16 &#8220;Cirrus Channel&#8221; 1.38 \u00b5m imagery, below, shows Harvey&#8217;s cirrus canopy covering much of the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. Cloud-top heights computed from VIIRS data (<a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/08\/CTOPHeight_0747_24aug2017.png\">Link<\/a>) shows a large central dense overcast with heights exceeding 50000 feet. ATMS 88-GHz Imagery at the same time is shown <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/08\/ATMS_88Ghz_0748_24Augst2017.png\">here<\/a>. Morphed Microwave imagery (from <a href=\"http:\/\/tropic.ssec.wisc.edu\/real-time\/mimtc\/tc.shtml\">this site<\/a>) hints at the development of a ragged eye shortly after sunrise on 24 August.
