The appearance of the smoke signature on Cirrus images was due to the fact that this spectral band is useful for detecting features composed of particles that are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">efficient scatterers of light<\/span> (such as cirrus cloud ice crystals, airborne dust or volcanic ash, and in this case, smoke).<\/p>\n<p>A comparison of GOES-16 &#8220;Clean&#8221; Infrared Window (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.goes-r.gov\/education\/docs\/ABI-bands-FS\/ABI_Band_13_FS_CLEAN_LW_IR_FINAL.pdf\"><strong>10.3 \u00b5m<\/strong><\/a>) and Cirrus (1.37 \u00b5m) images<em><strong> (below; <\/strong>also available as a 21 Mbyte<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/08\/170817_goes16_infrared_cirrus_Canadian_smoke_anim.gif\">animated GIF<\/a>)<\/strong><\/em> demonstrated that no smoke signature was seen on the infrared images (since smoke is effectively transparent at infrared wavelengths).<\/p>\n<p><div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a class=\"thumbnail\" href=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/08\/170817_goes16_infrared_cirrus_Canadian_smoke_anim.mp4\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/cimss.ssec.wisc.edu\/satellite-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/08\/G16_IR_CIRRUS_SMOKE_MARITIMES_17AUG2017_480x1280_B134_2017229_101536_0002PANELS_00002.GIF\" alt=\"GOES-16 Infrared Window (10.3 \u00b5m, top) and Cirrus (1.37 \u00b5m, bottom) images [click to play MP4 animation]\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">GOES-16 Infrared Window (10.3 \u00b5m, top) and Cirrus (1.37 \u00b5m, bottom) images [click to play MP4 animation]<\/p><\/div>A more upstream view of the smoke feature was provided by a comparison of\u00a0 Terra MODIS Visible (0.65 \u00b5m), Cirrus (1.375 \u00b5m) and Infrared Window (11.0 \u00b5m) images at 1626 UTC<em><strong> (below)<\/strong><\/em>.
